Tips and Tricks for a More Orderly Life

The first week of October is Get Organized Week, a time to focus on decluttering your home and workspace and developing systems and habits to help you stay orderly. Getting organized can have a positive impact on your life in many ways, including:

If you're not sure where to start, here are a few tips and tricks for getting organized:

  1. Declutter your space. The first step to getting organized is to get rid of anything you don't need or use. This can be a daunting task, but it's important to remember that less is more when it comes to organization.

Go through each room in your home or workspace and get rid of anything that doesn't fall into one of the following categories:

  • Items you use and love

  • Items you need for work or school

  • Items that have sentimental value

If something doesn't fall into one of these categories, donate it, sell it, or recycle it.

2. Create systems. Once you've decluttered your space, it's time to create systems for organizing the items you're keeping. This could involve creating filing systems for paperwork, organizing your closet by type of clothing, or setting up a system for storing and retrieving important documents.

When creating systems, it's important to make sure they are easy to use and maintain. If a system is too complicated, you're less likely to stick with it in the long run.

3. Develop habits. Once you have systems in place, it's important to develop habits to help you stay organized. This could involve putting things away as soon as you're done using them, scheduling time each week to declutter and organize, or creating a to-do list each day.

The key is to find habits that work for you and to stick with them. It may take some time to adjust, but once you do, you'll be amazed at how much easier it is to stay organized.

Additional tips and tricks:

  • Use labels. Labels are a great way to keep everything organized and in its place. You can use labels to label your filing cabinets, storage bins, drawers, and even individual items. This will help you quickly and easily find what you're looking for.

  • Get organized with technology. Many different apps and software programs can help you stay organized. For example, you can use a to-do list app to keep track of your tasks, or a calendar app to keep track of your appointments. There are also apps and software programs that can help you manage your finances, projects, and time.

  • Get rid of paper clutter. Paper clutter is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to disorganization. If you can, try to go as paperless as possible. This means digitizing your documents and storing them electronically. If you do need to keep paper documents, make sure they are organized in a filing system.

  • Enlist the help of your family and friends. Getting organized is a lot easier if you have the help of your family and friends. Assign everyone tasks to help declutter and organize your home or workspace. You can also make it a fun activity by having a decluttering party or an organization challenge.

Getting organized takes time and effort, but it's worth it in the long run. By following these tips and tricks, you can create a more organized and efficient life for yourself.
